Clatskanie Coyote

I use blog posts to share photos and videos of the critters we encounter at our home in Clatskanie. Below I show the very few times we have seen a coyote. For other critters, see these other posts:

So now, on to the coyotes.

We very rarely see the coyotes, although we sometimes hear them late at at night on the hill behind our place. Here’s a short sample:

And in the winter we sometimes see evidence of them:

One day in the autumn of 2024, one of them got much bolder and gave us our first (of very few) actual sightings. The coyotes I’ve seen in the past, in Arizona, were much smaller and more gray than this—to the extent that at first I wondered if this was a wolf!

Here’s a short video of a coyote trying and failing to find a way to sit comfortably on some of the junk on the hill behind our place.

On a mid-March morning I looked out my window and saw a young coyote on the other side of the fence. He stared at me a moment, then carried on with what he was doing: hunting. I watched him catch and eat a vole. While it was sad to see a little critter get killed, I confess the voles (and moles) do enough damage to my yard that I wasn’t sad to see it go.
